10 reasons to choose the mountains for your family summer holidays

Escape the crowds: Most of us aim at southern Europe for the summer holidays, desperate to get our dose of sunshine and a chance to bath. But the Aravis Mountains are also a wonderful spot to find a hot summer, close to water for a refreshing dip and full of fun and activities

- Run Free, breath and pick your own apples: Chalet Jamoo has the mountains and an orchard as a back garden! Large outdoor spaces, a swing, an orchard, shady terasses, outdoor eating : The ultimate taste of freedom and nature living for kids and adults.

- Exercise without thinking about it: Take your walking boots and go for a trek – whilst the adults will contemplate lengthy walks in the mountains, there are lots of walks to do with little legs too, visiting local villages or mountains lakes. They’ll love filling their water bottles in traditional fountains and search and personalise their very own walking stick!

- Try new things: Make your own cheese (some of local producers propose the experience to make your own cheese from milking the cow to the finish product) or try glass blowing and make your own Christmas Bubble

- Have fun: Go for a tree top adventure or a treasure hunt in the forest. Combine fun and physical challenge during this refreshing experience in the shades of the trees. For the bravest (and older) ones, consider the "via ferrata" in La Clusaz

- Go on an adventure: Sleep in a refuge! A wonderful opportunity to see sunrise and/or sunset from the top! It does not have to be a huge trek, part of trip can be made by car. Convivial, fun, different and breath taking all at once.

-  Take a time for culture fix: stroll in Annecy Town and visit the local galleries and museum. The small bridges and cobbled street will send you back in time. Visit Menthon St Bernard' castle and enjoy the evening light show.

- Swim, sunbath, relax:  Take a day trip to the lake (only 20/30mn drive) to enjoy the beach and watersports and spend a few hours strolling in Annecy’s old town with Alfresco dining.

-  Cycle and breath: Mountain biking is amazing in this area, following forest trails and waterfalls. For a smoother ride, load the bikes (or hire some there) and head to Annecy Lake and ride on the cycle lane surrounding the lake (close to flat between Menthon and Annecy) and take the boat shuttle back if the little legs cant cope anymore! Stop anywhere you want to go for a swim in the turquaz blue waters of the lake.

- Enjoy local food: visit the food markets (we love Thones' saturday morning market), fresh milk drawn by the liter at the local "fromagerie" (cheese factory), La Clusaz's speciality shops and the local "tarte a la myrtille" (blueberry tart) and the very many local restaurants scattered in towns and villages.

- Get some adrenaline: Try paragliding,  hot air balloon or "via ferrata", many different way to enjoy the landscape from above. For those who prefer staying grounded, the "Cret du Loup" chairlift in La Clusaz will take you to great heights and beautiful sights too!
